Bikes for Clunkers
Welcome to BikesforClunkers.org! Bikes for Clunkers was started in August 2009 by a utility bike shop called Joe Bike in Portland, Oregon, along with Zipcar and the American Lung Association, as a healthier response to the federal Cash for Clunkers program. We wanted to give people an alternative to buying a new car so that they could save their money while joining the growing ranks of people who get around by bike.
Since then, a growing list of nonprofits have joined us, and other bike shops in Portland will be taking part too.
Here’s how it works.
Using the 3 steps on this site, donate your old car (running or not) to any participating charity. Some of these charities will have your car towed if it’s not running. When you take your receipt to the bike shop, you’ll get a healthy discount on a new bike, big lifetime discounts on a Zipcar membership, a Bicycle Transportation Alliance membership that will save you a lot of money at dozens of Portland bike shops, and of course a nice tax deduction for yourself.
